I'm reviewing and updating my notes for my new and upcoming articles [book?] on Parameter Leading. And as I sit here at my desk and computer, it has become increasingly apparent to me that I must identify a word that I will use consistently to refer to "the people who report to a boss."

They are, of course,  EMPLOYEES.

But the word EMPLOYEE doesn't really signify the depth of the "people who report to a boss" concept I want to convey.

So I began my search for a better word [or phrase.]

I could use DIRECT REPORT.  I think DIRECT REPORT appropriately grasps the "reporting to a boss" idea. But it's two words [not my favorite] and it seems rather cold. [Go around all day in your office telling others you're a DIRECT REPORT. Ooooh!]

Then the words STAFF MEMBER, ASSOCIATE and ASSISTANT came to mind. While all appropriate, none have that extra "reporting" factor I want and believe is necessary.

So I took a trip to the Thesaurus pages. I typed employee. Wow, what a collection of names I'd NEVER wish to be called!

agent, apprentice, assistant, attendant, blue collar, breadwinner, clerk, cog, company man, craftsman, desk jockey, domestic, flunky, hand, help, hired gun, hired hand, hireling, jobholder, laborer, lackey, member, operator, peon, pink collar, plug, punk, representative, salesman, servant, slave, staff member, wage-earner, white collar, worker, working stiff, workman

Domestic? Flunky? SLAVE?

I wish this story had a better ending.

I still need a word. Do you have a suggestion for me?

Write to me, if you think you do.

Wishing you Skilled Leadership,

Rick
